People/Place/Location

In the reading "The Interior of Time" by van Eyck one quote stood out to me. "tree is leaf and leaf is tree- house is city and city is house- a tree is a tree but it is also a huge leaf- a leaf is a leaf, but it is also a tiny tree- a city is not a city unless it is also a huge house- a house is a house only if it is also a tiny city." How does this relate to design and architecture today?

  1. I think it relates to design and architecture by everything we do everyday. When he says “a city is not a city unless it is also a huge house- a house is a house only if it is also a tiny city" I believe he means that everything must have certain things to make it work. You should be able to layout a city or a home, concentrating on spaces, public/private, circulation, and points of interest, and realize that they are actually one in the same.

  2. When I read this quote, I think it is saying that everything has to relate and tie together in order to perform its function correctly. Just like a city has roads and circulation paths to get from place to place smoothly, a house has to have paths of circulation in order to move about the house smoothly. In the same sense, a tree has to have leaves in order to live and function. In order to have a city, you must have houses for the inhabitants that make up the city and in order to have a tree you must have leaves. Everything relates to each other in a cycle.
